In this article, I want to look at the already outgoing seventh generation of consoles (Xbox 360, PS3 and WII). The yard is already 2013, and we are all waiting for the launch of PS4 and Xbox One. All this, fortunately, does not detract from the current, seventh generation of consoles, which was … very controversial and the most discussed for history. And it was said even too much.
Actually, which confirms: all three consoles are long time to send to rest. And right now I want to take my scalpel and an ax to find out what and how in this generation it went wrong and why it will be remembered for a long time.
And we will begin our Requiem for this generation of consoles with Wii crumbs from Nintendo, published in 2006, which became a kind of thriller Michael Jackson from the gaming industry. Just because the engineers “Nintendo They were able – for the first time in the industry – to make convenient management for traffic controllers, and the company’s PR managers managed to capitalize NinTenso on the casual market – after the failure of “GameCube”. Unlike the PS3 and X360 gamepads (we are not talking about the keyboard and muscle), this management was much easier for all non-players. And only if the platform holder left the original name of the console, which was Revolution, then this would somehow justify the punctures-of which a million-the system itself.
After all, it is no secret that in the first two years of WII life it really was a revolution, as such. She was recognizable, had a considerable audience and, not for long, standing games. Many of you will say that WII cannot claim the first, and even the second, place in our platform race from 2005 to 2013. After all, it was a technically weak system with games for the whole family.
Nevertheless, the fact remains: “Nintendo” managed to keep afloat and print the treasured green pieces of paper using the new console. And speaking of the role of Mouses, this was the only example of the correct approach to the presentation of such a type of mass audience, which is not suitable for the periphery from the “sega” with the name “Sega Activator”. Moreover, the Mouses-control tried to copy “Sonya” and “MS”-neither one nor the other, however, did not work out anything. And close to the quality of the interface on the WII, and even more so to its games library, both companies simply could not finance.
You can say anything about the popularization of WII, and the propaganda of Nintendo, but this, believe me, deserves this respect, and they are worthy of every center earned on this system. Which, however, was wasted on WIIU ..
Now let’s look at the Xbox-360, which is more triumph-casino.co.uk understandable for a conventional gamer. The new console from MS not only strengthened the positions of Western companies in the Video-IGR market, but was the first-in a very long time-a console from a Western company, which is not only with a giant (then) PS2, but also with an impending storm in the face of WII. At the same time, the console is still sold well, despite the absence in one of the largest markets in the world – Japan.
And, of course, this is due not only to the love of the Japanese to mobile platforms, but also with the banal absence of reasons to buy a console. Although the “MS” attempts were quite significant-which costs only “Lost Odyssey” from Sakaguchi, one of the creators of the series “Finalfantasy”, and the almost annual exclusivity of “Tales of Vesperia” in the Land of the Rising Sun-everything went to dust due.
Moreover, this is surprising for the company, the first prefix of which was barely fleeing from the giant PS2, remaining afloat only because of two franchis: “Halo” and “Forza”. After such a failure, which was the original Xbox, Microsoft not only entered the market first, but also demonstrated not a frail agility, the first and the industry made the fully working online service Xbox Live, giving the Western developers the exit to the more open market and sutured in the hearts of gamers with a pleasant price of the prefix ..
The more amazing, of all three consoles of this generation, the most successful was the launch of the console from Microsoft. 10 million in the first year, fully working online service and support for almost all studios. Although the price was also high-a large number of broken consoles, a paid online service and too many versions that were not much different from each other. But the main thing is that we remember the Xbox-360 is a change in the industry paradigm from the model, concentrated on Japanese studios and publishers, to a more versatile and complex business model of the West. After 2009, when the Western studios already launched their first games to the large market, Japanese studios, driven by their internal motivations and a decline in interest on their “profitable” franchises, began to hire Western studios to make their games. That, however, in the end turned against themselves. And even the “masters” of the industry of the past, such as Kodzima, Yamaoki, Mikami and the rest, after some hesitation-admitted that the Japanese video-game industry remained in the dust, because not only no one wants to buy their games, except for gray-haired old men, nintedo-fans and journalists, but the industry itself can do not live without an all-preserving hand of Japanese publishers. What is more confirmed by the fact of a frank “murder” of some purely Japanese series, such as “Final Fantasy” or “Resident Evil”, due to exorbitant ego studios or mutual intercourse with the Western Industry, with the conception of games like “Neverdead” and “Witchblade”.
At the same time, Western developers, clogged in the narrow framework of PC exclusives and always aching players, were published with games, like “Deus Ex: Human Revolution”, “Skyrim”, “Fallout”, “Mass Effect” and so on. And even if we scold a lot of modern game industry, which gave rise to the conveyor development of “Call of Duty”, “Battlefield”, “FIFA”, “Madden” and the rest of the annual games, do not forget that there is more positive now than negative.
If you take a little deeper, you can remember how to the end of the PSONE cycle we saw linear games with melodramatic videos every month, which were explained only at the very end, step -by -step battles and a banal pharma of enemies to improve the character. Of course, today all this went into real games that will render right in front of the player’s nose, with a more diverse gameplay and choice. Many of them represent an open world, while others – a strong story campaign, others – a full -fledged multiplayer.
Be that as it may, this is a serious step in the right direction, still developing in a form convenient for all players and changing every time. Unlike boring and monotonous gameplay, history and world of Japanese games-which comes not only from the lack of any connection with the Japanese studios, but also from the banal span of the studio itself on the opinion of the players. But, returning to the Xbox-360: “Microsoft” not only sowed the grain of Western development in the epicenter of the gaming industry, but also took the first step to popularize the Western games and the development process among gamers around the world. And it is precisely for this that you need to salute this console.
Now let’s move on to the elegant and elite console of this generation, so elitist that the price tag with almost six hundred dollars has become not only the main chip of the platform, but also the main reason why PS3 was the only console in history, which was not dared from the shelves on Christmas holidays. What is still more deplorable, after – still discussed – “victories” from the N64 with PSONE and critical dominance with the PS2, where Sony took the majority of gamers from the scab with their swollen advertising budget – all this ended so well with the new console, into which Sonya’s engineers not only shoved (judging by the size of the console itself), but the most powerful processor, but the most powerful processor, but the most powerful processor.and made him the most difficult to study. From the very launch, reducing the price of to four hundred dollars and losing the trust of all Western and Japanese studios, Sony burned all the reserves collected on PS2, and released the prefix for TV, which had nothing to play for more than a year.

They did not take into account only one thing: Microsoft, barely recovering from the blow, which was Xbox, entered into a contract with IBM for the production of Xenon, the XBOX-360 CPU, after numerous consultations. What is the catch? And very simple: IBM, having reviewed the Cell-contract again, showed the drafts of the Microsoft processor, and at the next business meeting they signed an agreement. How? Even easier – the contract originally states that IBM could sell parts of the main architecture of Cell third parties. As a result, it turned out that Sony’s money was not directly, but helped their competitor. As a result, each console was supposed to be sold at a loss – and quite decent – until it began to massage it massively, which again led to a reduction in the price in stores. Many studios and developers immediately stated that they would not even work with the console, as Gabe Newell did, head of Valve. True, he said this between his second dinner and the walking of a manual rain – so he did not have to believe. And even if the Library “Steam” by that time was a little more than the book of books of any game journalist (T.e. empty), Gabe is one of the few people of the industry, openly criticized by Sony for new iron. And even if the third studios refused to work with PS3, the studio of the first magnitude, such as Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch, Zipper Ent.”, Were forced to pull the strap of the console.
